I submitted two photo essays for the 13th Seoul Photo Essay Contest. I heard about it Wednesday and the deadline is Friday the 30th at midnight. [edit: They moved the deadline to November 15th] This seemed like something I should really do so I dove right in.

I gave myself Wednesday and Thursday to write and revise the essays since this is the first time I’ve really had to write in months (besides blog posts). Then I uploaded them Thursday around midnight.

I may still do one more tomorrow since I don’t actually have to do any work at work.

There’s still a bit of time before the deadline if you’re interested. Here’s the website:

I’m going to post my two essays here next week. In the meantime, here’s my favorite picture of me in Thailand.

Back in June or July, I created a program to help me with getting my pictures onto my blog.

I used to manually put the filenames into each post in order to get the pictures to show up here. After years of doing that, I remembered that I can make computers do anything I want and decided to make the computer do it for me.

It’s nothing fancy but it does exactly what I need it to do. It creates all of the html code and inserts filenames based on the files in a folder that I specify.

If anyone’s interested, leave a comment or email me and I can give you more info on it. If you want, I could make one specifically for you. Free of course; it wouldn’t take long.

Here’s a picture of the program (click it to enlarge):

I’ve been taking pictures at the bars and clubs in South Korea ever since I found out where they are (my first weekend here). I did it mostly for fun, my own memories, and to learn how to work my camera in an atmosphere like that. I learned really quickly and took great pictures that first night and almost every weekend since.

Now, whenever I post pictures from these places, I get messages and comments from people I’ve never met saying how great they are. Some people who have promised themselves that they’d never return to these places told me they are planning to go back because my pictures make it look like so much fun. I was also told that one of the bars is planning to do an art show and they want my pictures to be the main attraction. That’s a huge leap from the level of photography I was at 3 years ago.

I feel like I’m in the rarefied atmosphere now where if I’m taking pictures of random people having a good time at these bars and clubs in South Korea, I should be getting compensated for it.

I went to a club named Time in Dunsan-dong this past Saturday. A friend who works there and saw my pictures from other places asked me to take pictures there and make the place look fun and exciting. He gave me a free drink when I first came in which I believe to be completely unrelated to him asking me for pictures. But that’s the only compensation I’ve ever received from taking pictures in the clubs in South Korea. But if I’m getting requests to take awesome pictures that will make more people want to come to their establishment and make more money for them, obviously I should be getting some of that. I’d be a major part (if not the only part) of their marketing and advertising department.

So if you know anyone that works for one of these places and would like more people to come (who wouldn’t), tell them how to get in touch with me and we can work something out.

I found an article on the JPG magazine website with tips on night photography. I was surprised at how much I didn’t know on a subject that I practice fairly often. The simplest tip that I never thought to do was this one:

9. Lower your LCD Brightness and check histograms

Setting your camera’s LCD screen to it’s lowest brightness setting ensures you don’t underexpose your image based on the LCD preview. LCD screens are calibrated for use in the daytime, so they can cause an underexposed image to look ok under nighttime conditions. While not strictly a tip for night photography, it’s also a great idea to view your histogram and make sure it’s not shifted too far to the left, and try different exposure times. It’s normal for a night photo’s histogram to be more to the left than usual, but not excessively so.

Check it out. http://jpgmag.com/stories/7779
