While I was on my way to Downtown Detroit to visit a friend, I stumbled upon random acts of art on the sides of buildings. The highlight of my accidental discoveries was when I saw the side of a gigantic building covered in paint that seems to drip from the top to the bottom.
In August, artist Katie Craig and a crew of young people began working on a mammoth (100-feet-by-125-feet) mural on a nine-story vacant building on E. Grand Boulevard at Beaubien. The North End building was selected because it “kind of links Youthville, Vanguard (Community Development Corporation), the new CCS and Russell Industrial,” says Craig. “It’s in the middle of things happening in that neighborhood.”

I used to deliver mail in Detroit while I was waiting on something for this job I had in Virginia. During that time, I just trudged along delivering mail and avoiding the sharp teeth of mangy, stray dogs.
Within a month after returning to Michigan from Korea, one of the first things I did was drive around my old mail route and see how the neighborhood was doing. I recognized the house of the guy from this story and got an icky feeling as I relived that phone call and the chills I got when I still had to go up to his door and put mail in his slot (don’t go there).
Anyway, I noticed the neighborhood was a MESS! Houses that used to have whole families in them were now a roof in the dirt. One of the biggest houses on that route had been reduced to stone steps and scorched stakes. Some of which could have been a child’s bedroom wall.
Seeing all that left me with a funny feeling. 4 years ago, that mail route was decent enough that I didn’t feel any type of apprehension walking down the sidewalk Monday through Saturday. This time, since the neighborhood looked so decrepit, I felt like any type of wild jungle beast could jump out of any of those raunchy and decaying houses.
Soooooo yeah… enjoy the pictures! Click on them and they get bigger.

Ok now it’s ridiculously warm in Detroit. I went back to Belle Isle and took a few more pictures. The Ice Tree isn’t what it used to be.

The Detroit area has been having a string of sunny and slightly warm days lately. Because of this, I’ve been going outside everyday and finding something to do.
Friday, I went to Belle Isle with my mom. It was such a beautiful day and I got some great pictures, including some of the Belle Isle Ice Tree.
