I used to deliver mail in Detroit while I was waiting on something for this job I had in Virginia. During that time, I just trudged along delivering mail and avoiding the sharp teeth of mangy, stray dogs.
Within a month after returning to Michigan from Korea, one of the first things I did was drive around my old mail route and see how the neighborhood was doing. I recognized the house of the guy from this story and got an icky feeling as I relived that phone call and the chills I got when I still had to go up to his door and put mail in his slot (don’t go there).
Anyway, I noticed the neighborhood was a MESS! Houses that used to have whole families in them were now a roof in the dirt. One of the biggest houses on that route had been reduced to stone steps and scorched stakes. Some of which could have been a child’s bedroom wall.
Seeing all that left me with a funny feeling. 4 years ago, that mail route was decent enough that I didn’t feel any type of apprehension walking down the sidewalk Monday through Saturday. This time, since the neighborhood looked so decrepit, I felt like any type of wild jungle beast could jump out of any of those raunchy and decaying houses.
Soooooo yeah… enjoy the pictures! Click on them and they get bigger.

Damn, man…
Those pictures tell a thousand stories!
Wow, you would think that there was a disaster there. Michigan is going through some hard times.
I remember I used to see kids playing in the streets and just doing what kids do. There was none of that when I went back. It left me with a sick feeling.
