The Roommate Debacle (Part 1)
My phone rang last Sunday night. My phone never rings on a Sunday night. Who in their right mind would want to talk to someone who isn’t in the same room as them on a Sunday night. The phone rang with the generic, someone who isn’t family, ringtone. Since it was Sunday and non-family, I decided to stay where I was and not even look to see who was calling. If it was important enough, I figured they’d leave a message. I have no problem getting up to check a message.
The phone didn’t make the “someone has left you a message” ding so I brushed it off. When I finally made it to the bed, I checked my phone and saw it was an old college friend who called. He had moved out to this area the month before. But it was definitely odd that he was calling me on a Sunday night. Since whatever he called for wasn’t important enough for him to leave a message, I didn’t call him back. That’s a policy of mine. I went to sleep.
End Sunday.
Start Monday.
I got up at around 8am and took my sweet time getting ready for work. I got a phone call around 9am. My phone never rings at 9am on a Monday morning. It was him again. I didn’t answer it. I figured it couldn’t be good news. Maybe he’d leave a message this time. Surprisingly, he did. Unfortunately, he wasn’t specific at all. That’s subsection A of the same policy stated above. If you want a call back, leave a message explaining why I should do so. I knew since he left a generic, call me back type of message, he had something to ask of me that I wasn’t going to be too fond of. I debated whether to even call back. I called him on my lunch break.
He began by explaining how he had finally found an apartment to move into. I thought he needed me to help him move. That would’ve been easy to reject. Instead, he continued to tell me how he couldn’t move into his apartment until the 15th of April. This was on the 2nd of April. He somewhat stammered around while telling me some other part of his story. Then he asked me if he could stay with me. I thought he wanted to stay with me for 2 weeks. That would’ve been a stretch but it would’ve been fine. Instead, he asked if he could stay with me for one night only. Wednesday night. He said he had a place to stay from Thursday until the 15th. I told him that it wouldn’t be a problem and I’d give him a call Wednesday to set up the logistics.
End Monday.
